Jürgen Drescher (House of Carpets, 2012)
House of Carpets, an installation made of cast aluminum, is based on a photograph which Jürgen Drescher took during a trip through the Sinai Desert. It shows a simple shelter for nomads made of carpets and strips of wood. It is set up right next to a rock face and serves to protect its occupants from the heat of the sun. The viewer can perceive this work of art, erected in an inner courtyard in the Bahnhofstrasse, to be a symbol, an iconic representation of the associations connected with this dwelling: a roof over one’s head, the culturally encoded construction technique, the nomadic existence, a sense of home versus mobility, the fragility of the human condition.
